LITERARY FESTIVAL BACK FOR FOURTH YEAR ON APRIL 29, 2018

New in 2018:  Cinema Arts Centre Hosting Venue

Huntington, NY (March, 2018) –  Word Up: Long Island LitFest is entering its fourth year with a new hosting venue, Cinema Arts Centre in Huntington, NY, and a new roster of best-selling authors. Featured authors this year include Meg Wolitzer, former Rep. Steve Israel, Alan Zweibel (back by popular demand for the fourth year in a row), Annabelle Gurwitch, husband and wife team, David Denby and Susan Rieger in conversation, and Long Islanders Tom Clavin and Alyson Richman.  Barry Dougherty, former Friars Club roast writer and historian, once again acts as emcee.

“We are delighted to welcome one of Long Island’s premier cultural events, Long Island LitFest, to the Cinema Arts Centre,” says Dylan Skolnick, Cinema Arts Centre co-director.  “Claudia Copquin and LitFest have been great partners with us on numerous events, and it’s great that we are now working together on LitFest’s beloved annual celebration of the power of literature.”

This year Long Island LitFest is taking place on Sunday, April 29 at 11 am, with two workshops offered at 10 am, before LitFest begins: Storytelling Improv and Publishing a Children’s Book & a Non-Fiction book. These are FREE to ticketholders.

There will be two reading/speaking sessions starting at 11 am, each featuring several best-selling authors taking turns at the podium or in conversation.  Audience Q&A follows certain readings.  All books will be for sale in the Sky Room, where authors will be available for signings after each of the two reading sessions, which begin at 11 am and 1 pm.

This book is her compilation of the women who made NY the epicenter of culture that it is today.  The beautiful illustrations by Hallie Heald bring to life the famous and infamous women whose contributions left their mark on New York City as we know it today.

This program will be presented in The Madison Theater at Molloy College, 1000 Hempstead Avenue, Rockville Centre.

Registration will start at 12:30 followed by the author’s discussion beginning at 1:30.

Following the author’s discussion and question and answer period, refreshments will be served in the lobby of the theater.

SHEILA NEVINS, PRESIDENT, HBO DOCUMENTARY FILMS, TO APPEAR AT

CINEMA ARTS CENTRE ON FEBRUARY 25 AT 4 PM

Long Island LitFest Presents a special afternoon with the legendary Sheila Nevins, President of HBO Documentary Films, at Cinema Arts Centre on Sunday, February 25 at 4 pm.  Nevins, 78, who is leaving HBO in March but has said she is not “retiring,” has been responsible for overseeing the development and production of all documentaries for HBO, HBO2 and Cinemax since February 2004. Tickets, which include the book, are $35 for Cinema Arts Centre Members | $45 Public, and available here.

Nevins will be speaking about her career at HBO and about her New York Times bestselling book You Don’t Look Your Age… and Other Fairy Tales, published by Flatiron Books in 2017. Each ticket holder will receive a copy of the book.  Her talk will be followed by audience Q&A and a book signing reception.

As an executive producer or producer, Nevins has received 32 Primetime Emmy^® Awards, 34 News and Documentary Emmys^® and 42 George Foster Peabody Awards.  During her tenure, HBO’s critically acclaimed documentaries have gone on to win 26 Academy Awards^®, the most recently of which was “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” in 2016.  Nevins has been honored with several prestigious career achievement awards including, most recently, the 2009 Governors Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and was made an NYU Tisch School of the Arts Honoree.

Long Island LitFest Presents an afternoon of essay readings by the writing group, Living, Out Loud: Writers Riff on Love, Sweat & Fears. This special event also features popular Newsday columnist Lane Filler, plus Rolling Stones memoirist Bill German, New York Times Modern Love writer Paula Ganzi Licata, former longtime Friars Club writer/author Barry Dougherty, Emmy Award winner Iyna Bort Caruso, Boston Globe essayist Robin Eileen Bernstein and Long Island LitFest founder Claudia Gryvatz Copquin.  Each writer will take a turn at the microphone to read an original work.  Audience Q&A follows. Lane Filler is a columnist and editorial board member with Newsday. He won the Bastiat Prize in 2013, the same year the editorial project he led was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He has covered presidential elections for two decades.  He was also a war correspondent embedded with elements of the Pennsylvania National Guard in Baghdad and Kuwait in 2004, which he says he found far more interesting than the thousands of sewer board, city council and school district meetings he has covered, not to mention the quilting bees, spelling bees and killer bee attacks. Now for Newsday he writes on national politics, education, business, economics and whatever is irritating him at the moment, which can be a monumental task. Filler, 47, is married and has one daughter.

Living, Out Loud is a group of accomplished authors, memoirists and essayists who travel to various venues throughout the tri-state area, reading their original works out loud to audiences.

Nelson DeMille to appear at Cinema Arts Centre on October 10^th, joined by Former U.S. Congressman, Steve Israel

Long Island LitFest Presents a special evening with legendary #1 New York Times best-selling author, Nelson DeMille, at Cinema Arts Centre on Tuesday, October 10^th at 7:30 PM as he presents his new book, The Cuban Affair. The event will feature an on-stage conversation between DeMille and Former United States Congressman, Steve Israel. The evening will also include a Q&A and book signing reception. Each ticket holder will receive a copy of The Cuban Affair.

Nelson DeMille is the New York Times bestselling author of twenty novels, six of which were #1 New York Times bestsellers. His novels include The Cuban Affair, Radiant Angel, Plum Island, The Charm School, The Gold Coast, and The General’s Daughter, which was made into a major motion picture, starring John Travolta and Madeleine Stowe. He has written short stories, book reviews, and articles for magazines and newspapers. Nelson DeMille is a combat-decorated U.S. Army veteran, a member of Mensa, Poets & Writers, and the Authors Guild, and a member and past president of the Mystery Writers of America. He is also a member of the International Thriller Writers, who honored him as 2015 ThrillerMaster of the Year. He lives on Long Island with his family.

Former United States Congressman, Steve Israel currently serves as Chairman of the Long Island University Global Institute and a University Writer-In-Residence. Partly based on current events and national news during his tenure in Congress, in 2014 Israel published a critically acclaimed satire of Washington, entitled “The Global War on Morris.” His second novel, “Big Guns,” will be published in 2018 by Simon & Schuster.  Israel was a Member of Congress for sixteen years. President Bill Clinton called him “one of the most thoughtful Members of Congress.” He serves as a regular political commentator on CNN.  Israel graduated from George Washington University with a BA in Political Science. His home is in Oyster Bay, Long Island.

Kurt Andersen to appear at Cinema Arts Centre on September 14^th

Long Island LitFest will present a special appearance by columnist, author, and public radio host Kurt Andersen at Cinema Arts Centre on Thursday, September 14^th at 7:30 PM as he presents his new book, Fantasyland. The event will feature an on-stage conversation between Kurt and Diane Masciale, Vice President and General Manager of New York’s WLIW21. The evening will also include a Q&A and book signing reception. Each ticket holder will receive a copy of Fantasyland.

Kurt Andersen is a columnist, author, co-founder of Spy magazine, and host and co-creator of the Peabody Award-winning public radio program, Studio 360. With Fantasyland, a sweeping, eloquent history of America, Andersen demonstrates that what’s happening in our country today—this strange, post-factual, “fake news” moment we’re all living through—is not entirely new, but rather the ultimate expression of our national character and path. America was founded by wishful dreamers, magical thinkers, and true believers, by impresarios and their audiences, by hucksters and their suckers.

Diane Masciale is Vice President & General Manager of WLIW21 and Executive Producer of local productions at WNET, parent company of New York’s PBS stations WLIW21 and THIRTEEN, and operator of NJTV. This Long Island native is responsible for day-to-day operations of WLIW21, the country’s 4th most-watched PBS station. Masciale, a three-time National Emmy Award-winner, is a veteran news executive having last served as Executive Editor of ABC’s Good Morning America and Executive Producer in the ABC Long Form Unit. Previously, she was Acting Executive Producer and Senior Broadcast Producer at NBC’s Today Show as well as Senior Broadcast Producer at Dateline NBC.

Writers, there’s a new Long Island conference in town:

FOREVER BUNGALOWS will fill a void in the writing community by
hosting the first and only 3 day writers conference focused on creative nonfiction.

Located in Sag Harbor, the heart of the east end of Long Island, award-winning
authors, editors, agents and marketing experts will gather this fall for an intensive
writing conference focused on both the craft and the business of writing essays,
biography, memoir, and narrative nonfiction. The Sag Harbor Creative Nonfiction
Writers Conference is the only one of its kind and will accept just 16 writers with a
student/faculty ratio of 3 to 1. Workshops, panel discussions, readings and informal
